Church of San Lorenzo (Tiwi, Albay)

July 26, 2006

The exterior of the Tiwi Church was very-well preserved until recently. The present municipal building built in 1919 had already been renovated by Mayor Naomi Corral in 1990. And now the church.

It was currently undergoing “uglification” when the HCS visited in June. The adobe facade was being plastered with a layer of cement (see the belfry at the top of the facade) with accompanying fake lines. An oversized portico in front of the church was also being constructed, one which would completely ruin the facade. This despite the fact that the Bicol Heritage Program at Aquinas University had already talked to the bishop who agreed that no more old churches would be defaced. Construction was already halted a month before but the parish priest was just too stubborn.

If I may suggest to the HCS, propose a heritage conservation seminar to the bishops for diocesan parish priests. They are just fascinated by modernity virtually ignorant of the value and beauty of heritage conservation. I also suggested to Fr. Jun about packaging the church for a conservation project to be funded by the Department of Tourism. I don’t know why he pursued for the modernization of the architecture.
Now is there still a way to restore the church despite such extent of uglification?

For Mae Ong and Aeche. Kaya nga conservation–preserving and renewing the original architectural design of the church. That doesn’t mean pababayaan mong mabulok and simbahan for the sake of its historical significance.

Ang mayor doon ay isang architect by profession. Yun lang baka bulag din sa value of preserving heritage sites. I am not sure if meron ngang active participation doon si mayor which seems to be the impression that Umali made in her comments.

In April 2009, when I was there, tigil ang construction. For lack of funds? I don’t know. Inquiry didn’t come to my mind that time.

mahina talaga tayo sa sense of history at heritage conservation. One time there was an exhibit sa Baclaran church and I saw Tiwi church as one of the oldest in the Phils. Now look at it. Napunta ako sa site na ito because I was really looking for it, to show my kids this summer when we visit. I remember before na lawanit ata ceiling nito or something. As to Aeceh comment as to lindol, it has survived centuries of lindol, I dont think its the issue, its the “uglification” that we are talking here, we can still do the strengtening of the structure without changing the overall look of the church. Wala ba say mga taga Tiwi ng ginawa yan? I think that could be one of Tiwi’s Tourist attraction, meron ba sinabi man lang ang mga taga Tourism office ng Tiwi dyan? mr. natanauan, sana di matapos ang crusade mo at kausapin yang pari kung andyan pa…lets have a sense of identity, kaming mga Tiwi ay naghahanap nyan…

I hope they have informed the community/public very well before they pushed through with this project whether it was for beautification or strengthening of the structure. this is to avoid pointing fingers at one another in the end. anyway, please don’t stop going to that church. I have loved it so well. I am not from bicol, but I am married to a bicolana and never fail to visit the church every time we take our vacation there. The heritage of the structure may have been downgraded, but I hope our faith did not.
